According to thereligionfaqs, religion in Georgia is an important part of the country’s culture and daily life. The majority of the population in Georgia is Orthodox Christian, with an estimated 83% belonging to the Georgian Orthodox Church. Other religions present in Georgia include Islam, Judaism, and various traditional beliefs. The Constitution of Georgia guarantees religious freedom for all its citizens regardless of their faith. This right is enshrined under Article 9 which states that everyone has a right to practice their chosen religion without discrimination or persecution from either the state or any other individual or group. Furthermore, there are laws in place that protect religious minorities from any form of discrimination and ensure that everyone’s religious beliefs are respected. In addition to Christianity and Islam, there are also some indigenous religions practiced by certain ethnic groups in Georgia such as Animism and Voodoo. Animism is mainly practiced by members of the Abkhazian ethnic group who make up around 8% of the population while Voodoo is mainly practiced by members of the Georgian ethnic group who make up around 10% of the population. These religions have been present in Georgia for centuries and still play an important role in many local communities today. Voodoo is particularly influential among rural populations where it is used for healing practices and rituals related to fertility, marriage, death, and ancestor worship. Georgia in 2011 was an independent country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. With a population of just over 4.5 million people, it was bordered by Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south, Azerbaijan to the east and the Black Sea to the west. The economy of Georgia relied heavily on agriculture, with agriculture products such as citrus fruits, tea and wine accounting for around 25% of exports while other sources included copper ore, timber products and machinery. The country had gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 after a peaceful revolution. Since then it had adopted a presidential system of government with Mikheil Saakashvili as its leader who was re-elected for his second term in 2008 amid accusations of vote rigging which led to protests throughout the country. In 2011 President Saakashvili’s government was focused on modernizing Georgia’s economy through foreign investment as well as initiatives such as free primary school education for children aged 6-11 years old being implemented by President Saakashvili’s government. Despite these efforts access to education remained low due to limited resources and infrastructure issues such as lack of electricity in rural areas. The Georgian economy also relied heavily on foreign aid from countries such as United States, United Kingdom and European Union which provided much needed resources for development projects such as road construction, water supply systems and health care facilities. In 2011 Georgia also had an emerging tourism sector that focused on cultural heritage sites due to its rich history dating back centuries which included ancient monuments, monasteries, churches and fortresses all located throughout the country.
