Topeka, Kansas
Topeka is the capital of the state of Kansas in the United States with 126,587 residents (U.S. Census, 2017) and constitutes a larger metropolitan area with about 235,000 residents. The city is located in northeastern Kansas by the Kansas River, 98 miles west of Kansas City and is an administration and trade center.
The name is of uncertain origin, but taken from the indigenous people. One interpretation is “a good place to dig up potatoes”, another is “smoky height”.
Population
More than 76 percent of the population is white and nearly 12 percent are African-American. There has been a slight decline in the population since 2000.
Economics and culture
The largest employer is the state of Kansas, which employs about every fifth employee. More than 22 percent work in education, health and social services, and about 10 percent work in public administration. About one-tenth of the retail work is active and about as many are employed in the production of industrial products (including food, printing and shoes). Many are also employed in transport, the financial industry, banking and insurance.
Washburn University of Topeka was founded in 1865. There are departments of other universities in Kansas as well as several colleges and technical schools in Topeka.
The Kansas State Capitol was designed after the Capitol building in Washington DC and was built between 1866 and 1903. The city has a zoo. There are several museums, including the Kansas Museum of History and galleries in the North Topeka Arts District. The city’s symphony orchestra was founded in 1957.
History
Indigenous peoples lived in and around Topeka for several millennia. In the 1840s, the area was visited by wagon trains on the Oregon Trail emigrant route. Topeka was founded in 1854 by anti-slavery colonists from Lawrence, Kansas. The site was regularly visited by steamboats transporting import and export products. Topeka gained city status and became the headquarters for railway construction. The city was characterized by conflicts between supporters and opponents of slavery. Topeka became temporary capital in the Kansas Territory in 1856 and capital of the newly created Kansas state in 1861. A wave of speculation led to a financial bubble burst in 1899 and many investors were ruined.
In the early 1900s there was car production in Topeka. The famous Brown Supreme Court ruling in 1954 led to the lifting of the racial divide in schools. In 1966, the city was hit by a powerful tornado that destroyed several historic buildings. In 1974, more than 10,000 people left Topeka after the closure of Forbes Air Force Base.
Heartland Park Topeka for motorsport opened in 1989 and Topeka Performing Arts Center in 1991. Since 2000, there has been a major revitalization of the city center.
Lawrence, Kansas
Lawrence, on the Kansas River, 50 miles southwest of Kansas City; 82 100 in. (2003). University and college town; seat of the University of Kansas, founded in 1866.
The city was founded by Abolitionists in 1854, as a station on the Underground Railroad, the escape route for escaped slaves to the free territories. The attack by the proslavery militia in 1856 and by Confederate guerrillas in 1863 (150 civilians were killed). The fighting in Kansas in the latter part of the 1850s helped trigger the Civil War (Bleeding Kansas).
