Tacoma, Washington

Tacoma, U.S. city, Washington, at Commencement Bay, the southeast arm of Puget Sound, 40 miles south of Seattle; 196,500 inbound (2007), included in Seattle’s metropolitan area (Seattle-Tacoma-Bremerton with 3.3 million inbound 2007). Important port with large exports of timber, grain, copper, phosphates etc. Sawmills, mills, oil refineries, copper and aluminum works. University of Puget Sound, founded 1888, Pacific Lutheran University, founded 1890.

Tacoma was founded as Commencement Bay in 1864, later renamed Tacoma and granted city rights in 1883.

Seattle, Washington

Seattle is a city in the state of Washington, northwest of the United States, on a property between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. The city has 724,745 residents, and is the center of the greater Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue city region with 3,867,046 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Business

Seattle is an important fishing port, with fur trading, large shipyards, sawmills and aircraft factories (Boeing), manufacturing of aluminum, iron and steel products and canning. Outside the city, in Redmond, is the Microsoft Corporation headquarters. Seattle has a good port with lively traffic on Alaska and the East, and is the end point for several major rail systems.

Education and culture

Educational institutions include the University of Washington, founded 1861, Seattle University (Catholic), founded 1892, and Seattle Pacific University, founded 1891. The city has both an Episcopal and a Roman Catholic cathedral. The 185-meter-high Space Needle Tower and the city’s single track were built for the 1962 World Exhibition.

History

Seattle was built in 1853 and grew up following the railroad construction in 1893 and the gold finds in Alaska. Many Norwegians and Norwegians reside here, a good many immigrants after World War II. Among the Norwegians who settled in Seattle was the world famous dog runner Leonhard Seppala.

The town is named after Seathl (born about 1790), who was the chief of Duwamish, Suquamish and other tribes in the Puget Sound area.

Bremerton, Washington

Bremerton, a city in the northwestern United States, Washington, at Puget Sound opposite Seattle; 34 100 in. (2007). Home port of the U.S. Pacific Fleet, with docks and naval yards (1891). Founded in 1901, strong growth during World War II. The battleship Missouri, where Japan signed the capitulation in September. 1945, had fixed mooring in Bremerton until 1998 when it was relocated to Pearl Harbor.
