According to thereligionfaqs, the majority of the population in Tunisia is Muslim, with 97.8% of the population identifying as Sunni Muslims. Additionally, there is a small population of Christians (0.7%) and Jews (0.5%) in Tunisia. As well as these major religions, there are also small numbers of people who practice traditional African religions such as Animism and Spiritism. Animism is a traditional African religion that has been practiced in Tunisia for centuries and involves a belief in various spirits or gods that inhabit natural objects such as rivers or trees. Animists also believe that ancestors can influence the lives of their descendants from beyond the grave and often perform rituals to honor them. Spiritism is another traditional African religion that involves a belief in powerful spiritual forces or energies known as spirits which can be found in all aspects of life including people, animals, plants, places, objects, and events. People who practice Spiritism believe that by worshipping these spiritual forces they can influence their lives positively or negatively depending on how they interact with them. In addition to Animism and Spiritism, there are also some Tunisians who practice Sufism which is a form of Islamic mysticism focused on inner spiritual growth and development through meditation and contemplation of God’s presence. Practitioners believe that by developing their spiritual understanding they will be able to gain access to higher levels of insight about themselves and the world around them as well as achieving greater peace within themselves. In 2011, Tunisia was located in the northernmost part of Africa and had a population of 10.6 million people. It had a GDP per capita of $4,400 and was considered an upper-middle-income country. Tunisia’s economy relied heavily on agriculture which accounted for around 20 percent of GDP and employed around 40 percent of the workforce. The manufacturing sector was relatively small contributing only 15 percent to GDP while tourism was growing rapidly but still relatively small. Tunisia faced numerous social challenges in 2011 including high levels of poverty with more than 20 percent of the population living below the poverty line as well as low access to basic services such as healthcare and education. Additionally, corruption was widespread throughout all levels of government which hindered development efforts. The environment in Tunisia suffered from years of mismanagement and neglect leading to air pollution from burning fossil fuels as well as water pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial discharges.
