According to thereligionfaqs, Peru is a predominantly Roman Catholic country, with approximately 80% of the population belonging to the Catholic Church. The largest church in Peru is located in Lima and is part of the Archdiocese of Lima. There are also numerous other churches throughout the country, with some being quite remote and difficult to access. In addition to Christianity, there are several minority religions present in Peru such as Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. These religions are mostly practiced by immigrants from India, Nepal, Indonesia, and other countries; however there is no accurate data on their numbers due to low levels of visibility among these communities. Peru also has a small number of irreligious people; however they remain largely invisible due to social pressure to adhere to one of the major religions present in the country. Additionally, there is a small number of traditional spiritual practices that still exist among some indigenous communities throughout Peru. These practices often involve animist beliefs and rituals that have been passed down through generations for thousands of years. These traditional beliefs often focus on ancestor worship and nature spirits as well as taboos related to certain animals or plants. In some parts of Peru these ancient traditions have blended with Christianity over time resulting in syncretic religious practices that combine elements from both traditions. This form of syncretism has become increasingly popular in recent years as it allows for individuals to maintain their cultural identity while still adhering to Christian beliefs and values. Peru in 2011 was a country of great diversity, both culturally and geographically. The population was estimated at 30 million people, with about 30% belonging to the Quechua or Aymara ethnic groups. The remaining population was primarily of Spanish descent, with a small percentage of other European and Asian immigrants. The official language was Spanish, but many indigenous languages were still spoken in rural areas. Politically, Peru was a representative democracy with a president elected by popular vote every five years. The 2011 president was Alan García Pérez who had been elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2011. The government also included a unicameral legislature composed of the Congress of Peru which had 120 members elected by proportional representation from 25 electoral districts across the country. The economy of Peru in 2011 had undergone significant growth since the late 1990s due to economic reforms which liberalized trade and investment while also modernizing infrastructure and improving access to education and healthcare. This resulted in GDP increasing from $45 billion USD to $200 billion USD between 2000-2011; however this growth had been accompanied by high levels of inequality which meant that many citizens still lived below the poverty line even though the overall standard of living had increased significantly over this period. The primary sources of income for Peruvian citizens were agriculture (which accounted for 16% GDP), industry (20%) and services (64%). In terms of international relations during 2011 Peru maintained diplomatic relations with many countries including Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico due to its geographical proximity; furthermore it was also a member of international organizations such as MERCOSUR (Southern Common Market), UNASUR (Union Of South American Nations) & ALADI (Latin American Integration Association). It also participated in regional initiatives such as the Pacific Alliance which sought to promote economic integration among Latin American countries while promoting trade agreements with other countries such as China, India & Japan.
