University: University of California Berkeley
Country: United States
Continent: North America
Field of study: English / American Studies
Study type: Summer Sessions
I visited UC Berkeley for three weeks and got a very good impression of college life in the USA. With the help of MicroEdu I found out about UC Berkeley because I wanted to find a university in the USA where I could experience campus life for three weeks. UC Berkeley is definitely one of the addresses that makes this possible. Visit mcat-test-centers.com to get information about University of Waikato.
Even before I flew to California, I naturally had many questions for the MicroEdu team about the application process and the courses offered. They answered all my questions very precisely and took their time. The application process for the Summer Session is uncomplicated and can be done at very short notice. All you have to do is fill out an application and pay the course fees on the respective university website (you can find the relevant links on the MicroEdu website) on the Internet. Because the MicroEdu staff kept in touch with me via email and gave me a lot of useful information, I felt very well prepared for my stay in the States.
I decided to live in a shared flat close to campus and found a great girls flat with the help of the website www.craigslist.org. Not only was this a cheaper alternative to expensive dorm rooms, but it was also a great way to make friends who showed me a lot during my stay.
I would recommend everyone to arrive a few days before their session starts as it gives them a chance to settle in and take part in one of the campus tours conducted by UC Berkeley students. You can learn a lot of interesting things about the university and its graduates. By the way, you can sometimes find his buildings in which you later have lessons.
If you’re arriving a few days early, it’s definitely worth stopping by the Summer Sessions office and asking where you can pick up your Cal (college) card. Not only can you use it to copy, pay for food and shop in the Cal store, but you can also use buses. For example, there is a bus that takes you straight to San Francisco without you having to pay anything for the ride. Depending on the time of day, the journey takes 30-45 minutes. This only seems half as long at first as there are many things to see and the view of the San Francisco skyline is very nice.
It’s hard to make comparisons since I haven’t visited any other campus in the US, but the UC Berkeley campus is very large and offers a wide range of courses as well as great recreational activities. If you want to train a lot during your stay, you not only have a sports hall with many different devices at your disposal, but also the opportunity to take part in sports courses. However, there is a small fee for this, but it is worth it if you want to do sports regularly. During my three-week stay, I only took one course in American Studies at the university and found that the professors are much more committed than in Germany. After each lecture, the professor took time for us to answer questions and discuss ideas. However, I had to read a lot more to prepare for the individual lessons compared to my German lectures/seminars. However, if you manage to read the reader, you will have no problems following your professor in the individual courses. There is usually a test at the end of the course; Depending on the professor, you will either have to expect short essay or multiple choice questions. It is also common to write a short essay on a specific topic, which must be submitted at the end of the course. Anyone who decides to complete a summer session at UC Berkeley will definitely gain great experiences and meet a lot of nice people. But you should also be prepared not only to meet American students, because a large number of students come from Asian countries and thus UC Berkeley offers its visitors a colorful mixture of many different nationalities.
Finally, a small tip: it is advisable not to take more than two courses if you do not want to spend your time only on campus and in one of the 27 libraries that the university has to offer. Because the range of day trips is huge (Muir Woods & Sausalito, Wine Country Napa Valley, Yosemite National Park) and those who love the big city don’t just want to go to San Francisco once.
