According to thereligionfaqs, the United States is a country of immense religious diversity. The majority of Americans identify as Christian, with the largest denominations being Roman Catholic, Protestant and Mormon. Other religions practiced in the US include Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. Religious freedom is a cornerstone of American society and is enshrined in the Constitution. This includes freedom to practice any religion or no religion at all without fear of persecution or discrimination. American culture has long been shaped by its religious influences and many holidays and other special occasions are celebrated according to various faith traditions. Christianity remains the dominant faith in the US with over 75% of Americans identifying as Christian. This includes both mainline denominations such as Roman Catholicism, Lutheranism and Methodism as well as more conservative denominations such as Baptists and Pentecostals. In addition there are several smaller sects including Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons that have gained traction in recent years. Islam is also widely practiced in the US with approximately 3 million adherents making up 1% of the population. Muslim communities can be found throughout the country although they are most concentrated around major cities such as New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. In addition to Islam there are several other minority religions practiced by small numbers of people including Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism which can mostly be found in larger metropolitan areas such as San Francisco or Seattle. Overall, religious freedom remains relatively intact in America compared to other countries around the world. There have been some restrictions on certain religious activities such as wearing certain clothing or worshipping outside authorized locations but most activities are allowed without interference from local authorities making America an attractive destination for religious groups from around the world who can practice their faith without fear of persecution. In 2011, the United States was a federal constitutional republic with President Barack Obama as its head of state. It was made up of 50 states and numerous territories, with an estimated population of over 311 million people. The US had a two-party system with the Democratic Party and the Republican Party as its main contenders. The country had one of the strongest economies in the world due to its diverse industries such as technology, banking and finance, manufacturing, retail and tourism. During this period, New York City was an international financial centre and one of the world’s most visited cities. Additionally, there were numerous universities across America which offered world-class education to students from all over the world. In terms of culture, America had strong traditions in literature, music, art and theatre which were highly respected around the world. Despite some economic challenges during this period due to global recessionary trends in Europe and elsewhere, overall America remained a stable and prosperous country that maintained its position as one of the major powers in both Europe and around the world.
