The majority of Tanzanians are either Christian or Muslim, with an estimated 30% of the population belonging to either faith. Christianity is the predominant religion in Tanzania, with around two-thirds of Tanzanians identifying as Christian. The majority of Christians in Tanzania are Catholic, followed by Protestant and other denominations. Islam is the second most popular religion in Tanzania, with an estimated 30% of Tanzanians identifying as Muslim. Sunni Islam is the dominant form of Islam practiced in Tanzania and there are several mosques throughout the country. Other religious groups present in Tanzania include Hindus, Buddhists, Baha’is, and African traditional religions. African traditional religions account for about 5% of the population and involve a belief in a supreme being as well as various ancestral spirits who can be called upon for assistance or guidance. It also involves participation in various rites such as initiation ceremonies, funerals, and festivals which honor ancestors and other spiritual beings. In 2011, the United Republic of Tanzania was located in East Africa, bordered by Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. It had a population of around 44 million people and was one of the poorest countries in the world with a GDP per capita of $1,280. Tanzania’s economy relied heavily on agriculture which accounted for around 25 percent of GDP and employed more than 70 percent of the workforce. The country also had significant mineral resources such as gold, diamonds and coal but these were largely untapped due to lack of investment. The manufacturing sector was small and contributed only around 10 percent to GDP while tourism was growing but still relatively small. Tanzania faced numerous social challenges in 2011 including high levels of poverty with almost 40 percent of the population living below the poverty line as well as low access to basic services such as healthcare and education. Additionally, corruption was widespread throughout all levels of government which hindered development efforts. The environment in Tanzania suffered from years of mismanagement and neglect leading to air pollution from burning fossil fuels as well as water pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial discharges.
