As Syria continues to recover from years of civil war and unrest, the importance of religious tolerance and acceptance is becoming increasingly apparent. While Syria had a relatively diverse economy, the country was largely dependent on oil and gas exports for its revenue. The government had also invested heavily in infrastructure projects such as roads and telecommunications networks. Despite these investments, the Syrian economy was severely hampered by international sanctions imposed by the United Nations in response to the government’s human rights violations. In terms of education, Syria had one of the highest levels of literacy in the Arab world with near universal access to primary school education. Higher education opportunities were also available to those who could afford it, however quality varied widely between institutions. In terms of healthcare, Syria had a public health care system that provided free or low-cost access to medical services for all citizens regardless of income level or employment status. In addition to its economic and social challenges, Syria faced serious environmental problems due to decades of mismanagement and neglect. Air pollution from burning fossil fuels was rampant and water pollution from agricultural runoff and industrial discharges caused serious health issues for many Syrians.
