In 2011, the Republic of Somalia was located in the Horn of Africa and had a population of around 10.3 million people. The majority of its citizens belonged to the Somali ethnic group and spoke Somali and Arabic as their official languages. Islam was the predominant religion with over 99% of its citizens practicing this faith. In 2011, Somalia’s economy relied heavily on agriculture and livestock production with over 65% of its workforce being employed in these sectors. Additionally, it also relied on fishing which employed around 8% of its workforce due to its abundance in coastal areas. Due to years of civil war and conflict, Somalia’s infrastructure was severely damaged in 2011 which had a negative impact on its economy. There were very few roads connecting cities within the country which made transportation difficult between regions and limited access to resources. In addition to roads, healthcare and education were also limited due to lack of investment from the government into these sectors with only a handful of hospitals offering quality medical care and very few universities offering courses in fields such as engineering or medicine.
