Other major cities include Koror and Airai. The official language of Palau is English, although it also has two local languages; Palauan and Sonsorolese. The majority of the population are Christian with a minority practicing Buddhism or Animism. The culture is strongly influenced by the surrounding Micronesian cultures as well as by Filipino culture. In 2011, Palau was considered to be a developing nation with a relatively low GDP per capita compared to other countries in the region. The economy relied heavily on tourism and fishing as well as natural resource extraction such as timber harvesting from its forests. There was also limited job opportunities for locals due to lack of industrial development or large businesses operating within the country’s borders at this time period.
