According to ehuzhou, Caldwell County, North Carolina was formed in 1841 from parts of Burke and Wilkes counties. It was named after Joseph Caldwell, the first president of the University of North Carolina. The county is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and is known for its abundant lakes and streams. It is home to many small towns such as Lenoir, Granite Falls, Hudson, and Sawmills. In addition to its rural atmosphere, Caldwell County is home to many historical sites such as Fort Defiance, a Revolutionary War fort built by General William Lenoir in 1781. The county also features several outdoor recreation areas including Wilson Creek Wild and Scenic River Area, South Mountains State Park, and Grandfather Mountain State Park. In the late 19th century, Caldwell County became known for its thriving furniture industry due to its abundance of hardwood forests. Some of the most notable furniture companies were Broyhill Furniture Industries Inc., Drexel Heritage Furniture Industries Inc., and Thomasville Furniture Industries Inc., all of which are still operating today. Agriculture has also been an important part of life in Caldwell County since its founding with tobacco farming being one of the main crops grown here. Today, there are more than 700 farms throughout the county growing a variety of crops including corn, soybeans, cotton, hay and vegetables. In addition to farming there are several other industries present including textiles manufacturing, plastics manufacturing and energy production from coal-fired power plants located throughout the county. Caldwell County, North Carolina is served by two public school districts: the Caldwell County Schools and the Watauga County Schools. The Caldwell County Schools serves nearly 8,000 students in grades K-12 from Lenoir, Granite Falls, Hudson, Sawmills, and other communities in the county. The district operates 14 elementary schools, four middle schools, four high schools and a number of specialty centers. It also provides several alternative education programs for students who may not be able to attend traditional school due to home or health issues. The Watauga County Schools serves nearly 6,000 students from Boone, Blowing Rock and other communities in the county. It operates 11 elementary schools, three middle schools and two high schools as well as numerous specialty centers. Both districts offer a variety of educational programs including regular academic classes as well as advanced placement courses for college bound students. In addition to academic courses both districts have a wide range of extra-curricular activities such as sports teams and clubs which provide opportunities for physical activity and socialization outside of the classroom. Caldwell County also has several private schools offering religious or non-sectarian education options to local families. These include Grace Academy of Christian Education which offers K-12 Christian based curriculum; Trinity Academy which offers K-8 classical education; High Country Montessori School which provides Montessori education for children aged 2-12; and Foothills Christian School which offers preK-12 faith based curriculum.
