According to thereligionfaqs, Mozambique is a religiously diverse nation, with an estimated population of more than 25 million people. The majority of the population adheres to Christianity, with an estimated 40% of the population identifying as Roman Catholic, while another 40% identify as Protestant. The remaining 20% practice traditional African religions or have no religious affiliation. Islam is also practiced by a significant minority in Mozambique, making up an estimated 15-20% of the population. Muslims are mainly concentrated in the northern and central regions of the country and are primarily Sunni. Other religious groups present in Mozambique include Hindus, Buddhists, Bahá’ís and Jews. Religious freedom is constitutionally protected in Mozambique and generally respected by the government. However, there have been occasional reports of discrimination against non-Christian religious groups such as Muslims and Bahá’ís. There are also some restrictions on religious expression for non-Christians such as bans on proselytizing or public displays of non-Christian symbols or practices. In addition, there have been some reports of government interference with minority religious groups such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and Seventh-day Adventists. Mozambique in 2011 was a Southern African country located between South Africa, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The country had a population of around 23 million people with the majority of the population belonging to the Bantu ethnic group. The official language of Mozambique is Portuguese, although other languages such as Swahili are also spoken. In 2011 Mozambique’s economy was largely driven by agriculture, which accounted for around 25% of GDP, followed by manufacturing and tourism. At this time Mozambique’s GDP per capita stood at around $1,100 which was significantly lower than most other countries in Africa. In terms of politics Mozambique had been ruled by a socialist government since 1975 when it declared independence from Portugal. The government system consisted of three branches: executive, legislative and judicial with a President as Head of State. Mozambique’s educational system consisted mainly of public schools that were free up to grade 12 but there were also some private schools available for those who could afford them. Higher education institutions included universities such as Eduardo Mondlane University which offered degree programs in various fields including medicine and engineering as well as technical universities offering courses related to business and finance.
