The country was home to a variety of ecosystems, from lush rain forests and mangrove swamps to dry deciduous forests and spiny desert shrub lands. Wildlife in Madagascar included over 100 species of lemurs, chameleons, geckos, frogs, snakes, birds, and more. It also had a rich history of art, culture and music that was unique to the island nation. Madagascar’s economy was largely based on agriculture with rice being its main crop. Other crops grown included cassava, maize, sweet potatoes and peanuts. Fishing also played an important role in the economy with most people fishing for their own subsistence needs or selling their catch at local markets. In addition to agriculture and fishing Madagascar also had some small-scale industries such as woodworking and basket making as well as some light manufacturing operations including textiles and electronics. The country faced several economic challenges due to its remoteness from major markets as well as its reliance on foreign aid for development projects.
