Islam is the dominant religion in Libya, with approximately 97% of the population identifying as Muslim. The majority of Muslims in Libya are Sunni, although there are also some Shia Muslims present in certain parts of the country. Apart from Islam, there are other religious practices present in Libya. Approximately 2% of the population identifies as Christian, with Roman Catholics making up around half of this group. Other Christian denominations such as Anglican and Coptic Orthodox make up the remaining 1%. Additionally, there are small communities of Jews (less than 0.1%) living in Libya, mainly concentrated in Tripoli and Benghazi. Finally, there is a small minority (less than 1%) who adhere to traditional African religions such as animism and ancestor worship. Overall, religious freedom is respected in Libya; people are free to practice whatever faith they choose without fear of discrimination or persecution from authorities or other members of society. However, certain religious practices may be restricted; for example proselytizing is not allowed without permission from local authorities. Despite this, there is still a great deal of tolerance among different faiths in Libya; people from different backgrounds are able to live peacefully side by side despite their differences. In 2011, Libya was a country in the midst of great turmoil. After decades of autocratic rule under Muammar Gaddafi, the country was in a state of civil war as rebel forces sought to overthrow Gaddafi and his regime. The conflict had resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands and extensive damage to infrastructure throughout the country. The economy of Libya was heavily dependent on oil exports, which provided much needed revenue for public services and infrastructure projects. However, due to the conflict, production had been drastically reduced resulting in an economic downturn and increasing levels of unemployment amongst citizens. Additionally, high levels of corruption within the government further limited investment into public services such as healthcare and education. Libya’s educational system was also severely lacking due to lack of resources and infrastructure damaged during the civil war; most schools were either destroyed or lacked basic resources such as textbooks and teaching materials needed for students to learn effectively. Furthermore, secondary education was virtually non-existent as it required resources not available within Libya at that time. The healthcare system in Libya also suffered greatly due to lack of investment by the government during times of conflict as well as lack of resources available for modern medical treatments such as surgeries or cancer treatments. There were some public hospitals located throughout Libya but they mostly lacked modern equipment and medicines necessary for more complicated medical procedures which left many citizens without access to adequate health care services when they needed it most. In conclusion, Libya in 2011 was a country still struggling with the effects from its civil war with high levels of poverty, unemployment coupled with inadequate educational and healthcare systems leading many citizens into difficult living conditions without access to basic needs or services necessary for them to improve their quality of life.
