According to thereligionfaqs, Kenya is a multi-religious country with over forty different religious groups and denominations. According to the 2019 census, Christianity is the most widely practiced religion in Kenya, accounting for 84% of the population. The remaining 16% of the population practice other religions, including Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Buddhism. Christianity is the majority religion in Kenya and is divided into three main denominations: Roman Catholic, Anglican/Protestant, and Eastern Orthodox churches. The Catholic Church has a strong presence in rural areas while Protestant churches are more popular in urban areas. Islam is the second largest religious group in Kenya after Christianity and makes up about 11% of the population. Muslims are mainly concentrated in coastal regions near Mombasa but have a presence throughout the entire country. The majority of Kenyan Muslims follow Sunni Islam but there are also Shia minorities present mainly among Somali immigrants living in Nairobi and its environs. Hinduism is mostly practiced by Indian expatriates living in Nairobi and its environs. Hinduism was introduced to Kenya during colonial times by Indian immigrants who were brought to work on British-owned plantations or as traders along the coast. Today there are numerous Hindu temples located throughout Nairobi as well as smaller communities of Hindus scattered around other cities such as Mombasa and Kisumu. Buddhism was introduced to Kenya by Chinese immigrants during the 20th century but remains a minority religion with only a few followers scattered around major cities such as Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru. Sikhism was also introduced by Indian immigrants during colonial times but remains largely confined to urban areas such as Nairobi where there are numerous Sikh temples located throughout the city. Kenya in 2011 was a vibrant and diverse nation, with a population of over 37 million people comprised of different ethnic groups, languages, cultures, and religions. The country was situated in East Africa and bordered by Ethiopia to the north, Somalia to the east, Tanzania to the south, Uganda to the west, and Sudan to the northwest. Kenya prided itself on being an important regional hub for trade, commerce and finance in East Africa. In 2011 Kenya had a vibrant economy that was largely based on its agricultural sector which employed more than 75% of its workforce. The country’s main exports were tea, coffee, horticultural products such as flowers and vegetables as well as fish products from Lake Victoria. Additionally, tourism was another important economic driver for Kenya due to its many national parks and wildlife reserves which attracted over 1 million visitors annually from all around the world. Despite its economic successes however Kenya also faced several challenges in 2011 such as high levels of poverty (over 40% of Kenyans lived below the poverty line) as well as widespread corruption within government institutions. Additionally, there were also inter-ethnic tensions between different ethnic groups which had led to sporadic violence throughout the country resulting in loss of life and displacement of people from their homes. In terms of politics Kenya followed a multi-party democratic system with elections held every 5 years since 1992 when multi-party democracy was adopted after decades under single party rule. In 2011 Mwai Kibaki was serving his second term as president while Raila Odinga served as Prime Minister under a coalition government agreement made after disputed elections in 2007 that had resulted in violence throughout the country. Overall, Kenya in 2011 had a vibrant economy based largely on its agricultural sector with tourism also playing an important role while also facing challenges such as high levels of poverty and corruption within government institutions along with inter-ethnic tensions that had resulted in sporadic violence throughout the country. Despite these challenges however it still maintained a multi-party democratic system with elections held regularly since 1992 when multi-party democracy was adopted after decades under single party rule.
