The majority of the population in Fiji is Christian, with an estimated 57% belonging to either the Methodist or Roman Catholic denominations. Other Christian denominations present in Fiji include Anglicans, Seventh-day Adventists, Baptists and Pentecostals. The Constitution of Fiji guarantees religious freedom for all its citizens regardless of their faith. This right is enshrined under Article 14 which states that everyone has a right to practice their chosen religion without discrimination or persecution from either the state or any other individual or group. Furthermore, there are laws in place that protect religious minorities from any form of discrimination and ensure that everyone’s religious beliefs are respected. In addition to Christianity, there are also some indigenous religions practiced by certain ethnic groups in Fiji such as Hinduism and Islam. Hinduism is mainly practiced by members of the Indo-Fijian ethnic group who make up around 37% of the population while Islam is mainly practiced by members of the Fijian Muslim ethnic group who make up around 6% of the population. These religions have been present in Fiji for centuries and still play an important role in many local communities today. In 2011, Fiji was an island nation located in the South Pacific Ocean composed of over 300 islands. It had a population of around 860,000 people and an area of 18,300 square kilometers. The official language was English but there were also several other languages spoken throughout the country such as Fijian, Hindi and Rotuman. In 2011, Fiji’s economy was largely based on tourism (30%), followed by agriculture (20%) and manufacturing (15%). The country’s GDP per capita was estimated at around $4,800 USD and its unemployment rate at 6%. Despite these successes there were still major challenges facing Fiji in 2011 such as inadequate infrastructure; environmental degradation due to deforestation and overfishing; high crime rates; high birth rate; low literacy rates particularly among rural populations; inadequate access to healthcare services; and political instability due to ethnic tensions and regional conflicts. To address these issues government initiatives such as increased investment in public infrastructure, improved access to finance for small businesses, increased focus on sustainable development practices through conservation efforts, free trade agreements with other countries, and environmental protection laws had been implemented throughout the country.
