According to thereligionfaqs, Burkina Faso is a landlocked country in West Africa with a population of around 19.5 million people. The vast majority of the population is religiously affiliated, with Islam and Christianity being two of the most popular religions practiced in Burkina Faso. Approximately 60 percent of the population follows Islam, and 30 percent follows Christianity. The remaining 10 percent consists of traditional African religions, as well as other minority faiths such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Baha’i. The majority of Muslims in Burkina Faso are Sunni and practice a moderate form of the faith; they are mainly concentrated in urban areas such as Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso. The Islamic community is comprised mostly of ethnic groups such as the Fulani, Mossi, Tuareg, and others. There are several Islamic centers located throughout the country that provide religious education to followers and host events such as Ramadan prayers or Eid celebrations. Christians make up around 30 percent of the population in Burkina Faso; they are mainly divided between Roman Catholic (19%) and Protestant (11%) denominations. Roman Catholicism is largely concentrated among ethnic groups such as Mossi or Gurunsi while Protestantism has been embraced by other ethnicities like Fula or Bobo-Dioulasso peoples. There are several Christian churches scattered across Burkina Faso that offer religious services to members or host events such as Christmas carol services or Easter masses. In addition to these two major religions, there are also several traditional African faiths practiced by small numbers of people living in Burkina Faso. These beliefs often involve ancestor worship or nature spirits; they are mainly found among rural populations living in rural areas such as Sanguie or Gnagna provinces. Finally, there is also a small number of followers belonging to other minority faiths such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Baha’i Faith, etc., although these religions have yet to gain much traction outside their respective diasporas within Burkina Faso’s borders. In 2011, Burkina Faso was a landlocked country in West Africa, bordered by Mali to the north, Niger to the east, Benin to the southeast and Cote d’Ivoire and Ghana to the south. The official language of Burkina Faso is French; however, there are numerous native African languages used throughout the country including Mooré, Fulfulde and Dioula. The population of Burkina Faso in 2011 was estimated at around 16 million people with a population density of approximately 81 people per square kilometer. At this time, Burkina Faso was considered one of the poorest countries in the world. It had a gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of only $1,082 USD in 2011 which placed it among the bottom ten countries worldwide. This poverty rate was largely due to high unemployment rates which stood at over 40 percent and a lack of access to basic services such as health care and education. In addition, Burkina Faso experienced frequent natural disasters such as drought and flooding which further hindered economic growth. Nonetheless, despite these challenges there were still some bright spots for development such as improved access to clean water sources and growing access to telecommunication services.
