Moreover, Australia had a vibrant cultural scene with numerous art galleries, museums and cultural events taking place throughout the year. Politically speaking, Australia was a stable democracy with free elections held every three years for both federal and state governments. The country had an active civil society with numerous non-governmental organizations dedicated to protecting human rights or promoting environmental causes. Moreover, Australia was actively engaged in international affairs through its membership in various regional organizations such as ASEAN or APEC as well as through its participation in United Nations peacekeeping operations around the world. Overall, Australia seemed poised to continue its success story into 2012 thanks to its strong economy and commitment to providing quality public services such as healthcare or education for all citizens regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds.
