Although Afghanistan is formally a non-aligned country, Soviet influence has gradually increased after World War II. However, the Kremlin does not make intrusive use of it. By the way, Zahir did not allow any, and therefore also no communist party formation. Moreover, Afghanistan also accepted development aid from Western powers. In 1963 Daud was forced to resign. From that time on it is forbidden to allow members of the dynasty to sit in the cabinets. Under the constitution of 1964, the constitution of the state formally took on a parliamentary character. That formality was a fake, because despite the elections in which various candidates could be chosen, party formation remained taboo. In 1971 and 1972, Afghanistan was ravaged by drought and famine. Officials seized imported American grain and sold it black. The dissatisfaction now manifesting itself led to the promise to allow parties and to the announcement of several reforms. In 1973 Zahir was overthrown and Daud proclaimed the republic. Surrounded by USSR-trained officers, Daud still seems to be pushing for annexation of the Pashtun territories in northern Pakistan. Afghanistan has so far kept out of the Sino-Russian conflict. As a result, relations with China are correct. Check philosophynearby for Afghanistan in 2019.
