Freetown

Densely forested hills surround the bustling historic port city of Freetown. Stroll around town to see the 500-year -old cotton tree and the De Ruyter Stone. The King’s Yard was where land was distributed for freed slaves, and a visit to the museum provides insight into local history. Animal sanctuaries

Visiting permits and a guide are available from the Freetown Ministry of Forestry and Agriculture. Outamba Kilimi National Park in the north can be reached from Freetown by bus, car or plane. The impressive landscape is home to elephants, chimpanzees and pygmy hippos. The Sakanbiarwa nature reserve should be visited at the beginning of the year, the blooming splendor of the orchid species is a real feast for the eyes.

Introduction

Freetown has nightclubs and two casinos. Music, dancing and typical local entertainment are offered by the hotels on Lumley Beach and in the Cape Sierra region. The most famous local music groups perform on the terrace of a beach club.

Social Rules of Conduct

Tribal leaders, religion and secret societies still play a major role in social life and ensure social cohesion. People shake hands to greet each other, and the usual forms of politeness also apply here. Small gifts from the company or from the guest’s home country are gladly accepted. Everyday clothing is accepted everywhere, and elegant attire is only expected on special occasions. Tipping: Hotels and restaurants charge 10-15% for service. Taxi drivers do not expect tips.

Tropical and humid all year round. Between November and April it is very hot and dry, with sea breezes cooling the coastal region. The rainy season is from May to November. From December to January, the dry and dusty harmattan wind blows from the Sahara.
