The Miami-Dade Zoological Park and Garden, formerly MetroZu, is not just the largest and oldest in Florida. Its unique feature is that it is the only tropical zoo in the United States. The zoo was founded in 1948 in Crandon Park, then in 1980 moved to the former Naval Base Richmond. The entire territory of the zoo is divided into four main zones: Asia, Africa, Amazonia and Australia. The Australian part adjoins the Sami amphitheater, designed for 800 seats. It hosts daily animal shows, as well as concerts and cultural events. The Australian fauna is not very widely represented in the zoo, but still it is worth looking at koalas, emus, kangaroos, giant tortoises and New Guinean “singing dogs” dingoes.
You can move around the zoo in an air-conditioned monorail train that makes four stops – one for each section of the park. There are guided tours on a daily basis.
Finally, the American part focuses predominantly on the fauna of Florida; especially in the Everglades region. Florida panthers, brown bears, crocodiles and alligators, otters and pelicans live here, as well as nine-banded armadillos, raccoons and skunks.

This state park covers an area of 2 hectares in the Coconut Grove area. The central attraction of the park is the eponymous mansion, which was built in 1891 and has become by now the oldest house in Miami-Dade County. Ralph Middleton Munro, one of the founders of Coconut Grove, once lived here. In 1973, the Florida Park Service purchased approximately 1/8 of the estate from the Munro heirs.
Ralph Munro decided to settle in Florida in 1887. Being a keen yachtsman and yacht designer, he chose this place as much more suitable for doing what he loved than his native New York. Munro was subsequently elected commodore of the Miami Yacht Club, a post he held for 22 years. Throughout his life, he developed design plans for 56 different yachts. One of his last boats, the Mikko, could be seen in the park until Hurricane Andrew, and a replica of his 8.5-meter boat, the Egret, is still on display here.
