Raleigh, North Carolina
Raleigh is the second largest city and capital of the state of North Carolina in the United States with 469,288 residents (U.S. Census, 2018), and together with Durham, Cary and Chapel Hill constitutes a larger metropolitan area with about 2.1 million residents. This is called the Research Triangle or The Triangle.
The city is located in the north-central part of North Carolina 447 miles southwest of Washington, DC. Raleigh is named “City of Oakes” by the many oak trees in the center and is one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. The Neuse River flows through the northeastern part of the city. Most of Raleigh is located on gently rolling hills that head east. The city has many parks, including the tourist attraction Pullen Park as well as Dorthea Dix Park and Umstead Park. Capitol Square is surrounded by several state buildings.
The name is after the British explorer Walter Raleigh (1552-1618), who founded the first English colony in North America.
Population
57.5 percent of the city’s population is white, 29.3 percent are African-American, 11.4 percent are Hispanics (of Hispanic origin), and 0.5 percent are North American Indigenous people. Since 1830 and especially after 1960, the city has had a growing number of residents.
Economics and culture
Most are employed in the state administration and many are employed in health care, teaching and research. The industry manufactures electrical and electronic products and medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, clothing and food products. Raleigh has extensive banking and insurance operations.
The city is part of the Research and Teaching Collaboration Research Triangle that includes North Carolina State University in Raleigh, Durham University in Durham and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Raleigh has several universities and colleges, including technical college and agricultural college.
There are several museums and galleries, such as the Contemporary Art Museum of Raleigh, the North Carolina Museum of Art, the North Carolina Museum of History and the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Concerts are held at Coastal Credit Union Music Park at Walnut Creek, Red Hat Amphitheater, Koka Boot Amphitheater and Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts.
Among annual events are the Art in Bloom (March), Dreamville Festival and Mid-Town Square Spring Festival (April), Cas Oktoberfest and Triangle Oktoberfest (October), as well as Moonlight in the Garden and Raleigh Christmas Parade (November).
History
Raleigh is one of the few cities in the United States that is planned and built as a state capital. In 1788, a few years after the American Revolution, its location in a wooded area 56 kilometers from the Atlantic Ocean was chosen to protect against coastal attacks. Raleigh was conceived as a city in 1792. It was constructed in a grid pattern with the North Carolina State Capitol building downtown. In 1808, future U.S. President Andrew Johnson was born here. The Capitol building was destroyed by fire in 1831, but rebuilt and inaugurated in 1840. The Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad railway line opened the same year. The Pullen Park amusement park was inaugurated in 1887.
The first airport was put into operation in 1929. A hurricane in 1954 caused significant damage. The opening of the Research Triangle in 1959 gave rise to rapid urban growth. In 1991, two large skyscrapers were erected. The 164-meter-high skyscraper PNC Plaza (formerly RBC Plaza), an office and residential building on 34 floors, was completed in 2008. A tornado in 2011 caused significant damage. The Raleigh Union Station Railway Station opened in 2018.
Greensboro, North Carolina

Settled in the 1770s, Greensboro was during the end of the American Civil War the Confederate capital for a short period. Market town 1810, city status 1870. The first “sit-in” in the civil rights struggle took place at the Woolworth lunch restaurant here on February 1, 1960. On the 50th anniversary, February 1, 2010, the International Civil Rights Center and Museum was opened in the same premises where the protest took place, and the original tables and chairs from the lunch spot are on display there. Birthplace of famous media man Edward R. Murrow.
