Dover, Delaware

According to, Dover is the capital and second largest city in the state of Delaware in the United States with 37,538 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). It forms a larger metropolitan area comprising the Kent county with about 179,000 residents. The city is centrally located in Delaware on the St. James River on the Delaware Plain. The town was named after Dover in England and was given by William Penn.


More than 90 percent of the population is made up of nearly as many white Americans as Americans of African descent. The population is rising rapidly.

Economics and culture

Most people work in the service sector since Dover is the state capital. Many work at Dover Air Force Base southeast of the city and at food manufacturer Kraft Foods. There is also some light industry and trade in agricultural products.

Dover is located in Delaware State University and branches of the University of Delaware and Wilmington University. It is also a technical college.

Two weekends every year, NASCAR competitions are held at Dover National Speedway, and the Firefly Music Festival is held annually in part of the area.

The city has several large and small parks as well as a number of buildings and monuments from the American colonial era.


Dover was founded in 1683 and became the state capital in 1777. At The Green is the Old State House (rebuilt in 1787-1792) which served as the Capitol building until 1933 when the state offices were transferred to the Legislative Hall nearby. Bayhealth Medical Center opened in 1997 after the merger of two hospitals.
