Titusville, Pennsylvania

Titusville, city of Pennsylvania, USA; 5600 residents (2010). Titusville is located on the River Oil Creek in northwest Pennsylvania, 60 km south of Erie.

History

The city was founded in 1796 by surveyors Jonathan Titus and Samuel Kerr. The natural emergence of oil along Oil Creek had long been known, and was sold as medicine. In 1857, the Pennsylvania Rock Oil Company leased a piece of land outside the city to try to extract petroleum for lighting on a somewhat larger scale. Company Representative Edwin Drakefound, after preliminary investigations, that a well could be a relevant recovery method. In August 1859 Drake found oil at a depth of 22 meters. The discovery initiated an oil boom in and around Titusville. The city received the first oil refinery in the United States, and from the 1870s the first industrial extraction of natural gas. In 1892, a flood in Oil Creek led to large spills of oil and extensive damage to the environment. Throughout the 1900s, oil recovery moved to other areas, and the city experienced stagnation and a decline in population from 1960. The city’s last oil refinery was closed in 1950.

Pittsburgh has many colleges and universities, including the University of Pittsburgh, founded in 1787, and Carnegie Mellon University, founded in 1900. There are many museums and art galleries.

History

The area by the rivers was long inhabited by shawnee and several other indigenous peoples. In 1758, the British expelled the French from Fort Duquesne from 1754. To secure dominance over the upper reaches of the Ohio River, the British built Fort Pitt in 1761. The city was founded in 1764 and became a center for settlers traveling down the Ohio River.

The first smelting furnace was used around 1792 and became a precursor to the iron and steel industry. Strategic location and rich natural resources propelled commercial and industrial growth. The completion of the Pennsylvania Canal and the Portage Railway, both in 1834, opened large markets for commerce and shipping.

After World War II, Pittsburgh has been in strong development and air and rivers have been cleansed. In the Golden Triangle there are several skyscrapers.

Lebanon, Pennsylvania

Lancaster, Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, 110 miles west of Philadelphia; 55 350 in. (2003). Forms a larger metropolitan area that encompasses all of Lancaster County, with 482,800 in (2003). The city is the center of trade for one of the richest agricultural districts in the United States, and has slaughterhouses and multifaceted industry. FW Woolworth opened its department store chain here (1879-80), the so-called “5-and-10 cent store”. It is also the cultural center of Pennsylvania’s “Dutch County,” and many of the city’s residents belong to Amish, Mennonite, and other religious sects.

Lancaster was the nation’s capital during the War of Independence (Sept. 27, 1777) and Pennsylvania’s capital 1799-1812. Known for the production of Conestoga Wagons and Kentucky (Pennsylvania) Rifles. President James Buchanan and slave opponent Thaddeus Stevens lived here.

Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Gettysburg is a small town in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States, 60 km southwest of Harrisburg. The city has 7,633 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Battle of Gettysburg 1st – 3rd. July 1863 is considered the turning point in the American Civil War. Here, President Abraham Lincoln gave his most famous speech, The Gettysburg Address, in the establishment of an honor cemetery on November 19, 1863.

President Dwight Eisenhower lived here as a pensioner, and his home today is a national monument (1967).

Altoona, Pennsylvania

Altoona, city of Pennsylvania, USA. Altoona is located approx. 160 km east of Pittsburgh. Got its name after the railway junction Altona west of Hamburg in Germany.

Founded in 1849 by the Pennsylvania Railroad in connection with the construction of a railway line across the Allegheny Mountains. Gained city status in 1867 and grew rapidly from approx. 2000 residents in 1850 to approx. 30,000 in 1890. Large railway workshops and other mechanical industries grew during the heyday of 1920-1950, today most of these are closed down and the city has almost halved its population from 1930 to the present day.

Near the town lies the famous Horseshoe Curve, which with a 220 ° curvature leads the railway over a pass 723 m. The construction was one of the goals of Operation Pistorius – a failed German sabotage attack against a number of targets in the United States in 1942.

Bethlehem, Pennsylvania

Bethlehem is a city in the northeastern United States of Pennsylvania, on the Lehigh River, 70 miles northwest of Philadelphia. The city has 75,707 residents and, together with neighboring cities Allentown and Easton, forms a larger urban and industrial region with 840,550 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Bethlehem became a heavy industrial center during the industrial revolution, and long had large steel mills (Bethlehem Steel Corporation, 1857–2003). The city was founded by the gentlemen in 1741 and is still the center for the gentlemen in America. By the way, the town has a well-known Bach choir, founded in 1898.
