Supervision from the MicroEDU

The DBS I have been made aware by the MicroEDU website when I for information on a semester abroadsearched in an English-speaking country. I already had positive experiences with MicroEDU in my bachelor’s degree when I went to Bangkok and therefore applied without hesitation. As always, it worked very quickly and very well. Maintaining MicroEDU is super-quick and super-easy. I basically had two universities, the advisor gave me wonderful advice on choosing a course and was always at my side during the entire application process. The application criteria even for the master’s courses are not very strict, you can get in even with moderate English skills and average grades. The university does not have a real campus and consists of several buildings, but is very centrally located. Visit educationvv.com to get information about Vancouver Island University student exchange program.

Support from Dublin Business School

The on-site staff were also very helpful, but I found the organization a bit chaotic at the beginning. They said we have an orientation week, but it was an orientation day on Monday and after that the whole week was free, which was unexpected. I advise everyone to properly inform themselves and possibly to plan a short trip right at the beginning so that this week can be filled nicely. I was put into the wrong group and no one could tell me exactly where I belonged. When, after a few hours, I found the group with master’s students, it turned out that we did not get to know the local students, but only the foreign students (who are 99% German). Organizationally, I don’t think it’s optimal because the group was divided equally and the Germans always stayed with the Germans. That may not be a problem for some, I just thought it was a shame because I wanted to speak more English. But everyone was super nice, I got to know a lot of great people with whom I still have contact. After a few weeks I was lucky and then got to know some international fellow students and was able to speak more English in everyday life, which was the purpose of the whole semester for me. Apart from that, everything was very well organized. If you have any questions, you always get quick feedback and support from DBS. Lectures

You are free to choose your courses and can put together courses from different Masters and MBA programs (provided there is no overlap and unfortunately there were many). Many courses that were initially announced were canceled at short notice, so you shouldn’t commit too much to your choice of course in advance and try to be flexible in your choice of course. I took a total of three courses and was very happy with them.

  • Business Strategy (my absolute favorite subject)
  • Information Systems and Project Management (very exciting project)
  • Strategic Leadership & Management (less exciting lecture, but exciting projects and term papers)

In all three courses we had to write group projects and term papers, which I really enjoyed. And no exams, which corresponds to the MBA standard. The professorship was good and the content was exciting. I learned a lot and was able to apply a lot of knowledge.

Unfortunately, I also had to find out that the English level of most of the students is pretty bad, given the low TOEFL requirement. Most Irish do not do a master’s and stick with the bachelor’s degree. The students at the DBS came from all over the world, accordingly clear differences could also be found in the level of education. Many of the MBA students studied musicology or philosophy in their bachelor’s degree, so they naturally lacked the necessary basic knowledge in terms of business administration Methods and Models. Nevertheless, this diversity has been a very exciting challenge and experience. The results of the group work were always very good.

Leisure and travel

You can go out in Dublin during your free time. The nightlife is very colorful and diverse. Also traveling in the country is highly recommended as Ireland just outside Dublin is just really nice. I also took advantage of the proximity to the sea (although cold) every week. The weather was surprisingly good and we had sunshine with mild temperatures almost every day.

Fun

I had a lot of fun in Ireland, in and outside of the university. I can really only recommend the university.

Costs

The cost is reasonable and cheap relative to other universities in the UK and Ireland. The cost of living is quite expensive, however. Actually everything is more expensive than in Germany.
