The southern tip of Brooklyn has a special climate: noticeably more sunny days, the ocean breeze freshens the air. The first villas of wealthy New Yorkers appeared here back in the 19th century, when Coney Island, a peninsula located here, was still an island. At the beginning of the last century, the canal that separated it from the mainland was filled up and a subway was laid, after which crowds of people poured onto the local beautiful beaches. New microdistricts of Coney Island appeared: Brighton Beach in the middle and Manhattan Beach in the east, the aristocratic village of Seagate in the west fenced off from them with a high fence. The beaches were quickly overgrown with entertainment infrastructure – bars, restaurants and attractions, the famous Luna Park appeared.
What to watch
Summer Coney Island is a great place to relax and have fun. The main attraction was and remains the attractions of the Luna Park, almost killed by the Great Depression, but revived at the end of the last century. The horses of the carousel are still running in circles, the ferris wheel is spinning, the carts of the Cyclone, the largest wooden roller coaster (we call them American), rumble overhead. Steep turns lay the steel rails of the Thunderbolt. Extreme swing “Zenobio” tosses and turns passengers as they want. Not inferior to them is the “Sling-Shot”, a giant catapult that throws people to a height of 50 m in a lattice ball.
Recently, an aquarium was opened in Koni, in its pools dolphins and seals give performances, flocks of fish swim behind thick glass.
The summer season starts with the Neptune Festival with a parade of mermaids. For the whole of October, the park turns into a treasure island with pirates, mass processions, master classes in carving pumpkins for Halloween. In parallel, there are performances in the Amphitheater, baseball games at the stadium, contests for eating hot dogs and hamburgers.

Skyscrapers are not at all monotonous boxes of glass and concrete, as many of those who have never seen them believe. One has only to look at the panorama of Manhattan once to be convinced of the fallacy of this statement. Particularly stand out against the general background of the building erected at the dawn of the era of skyscrapers in the first half of the last century, and among them – the Chrysler Building, crowned with a 7-tiered crown and a thin spire directed to the sky. It was erected in 1930, during the heyday of the Art Deco style in architecture, and serves as an excellent example of its implementation in high-rise construction.
The author of the project is William van Elen, the customer is Walter Chrysler, whose cars then already became a symbol of the American dream. The building was built for the headquarters of his company, but today it houses hundreds of offices of various companies, as a result of which only the halls of the first floors are accessible to tourists.
A bit of history
The history of the construction of the Chrysler Building is a saga of rivalry between former friends who have become implacable enemies. We are talking about the architects van Elen and Severance, the builder of the Tram Building (not to be confused with the modern Trump Tower). Everyone wanted their skyscraper to become the tallest in the world. For this, Severance increased the height of his building by two feet (about 0.7 m) and pulled ahead. But van Elen, that is, Chrysler, was allowed to install a 38 m high spire on the roof. The structure was secretly made, assembled inside an unfinished house and assembled in just 1.5 hours. For 11 whole months, the Chrysler Building held the title of the tallest building on Earth until the Empire State Building was commissioned.
What to watch
The height of the skyscraper, together with the spire, is 319.5 m. Its walls are finished with light brick, the window openings are darker. The building has 77 floors, but the top 7 are technical, they are designed to accommodate mechanisms and electronic equipment. They are covered by a “crown” of polished stainless steel, a pattern formed by triangular windows, reminiscent of the rims of the most expensive Chrysler model of that time. Steel gargoyles in the same Art Deco style grin at the corners of the 61st floor.
For its elegant appearance, the building was nicknamed the “Beauty of Manhattan”.
The interior is not inferior to the facades thoughtfulness and taste. In the decoration of halls and elevators, a combination of stainless steel and fine wood, revolutionary for that time, was used.
