Special features for an Academic Gap Year
For all school leavers who want to complete an Academic Gap Year after completing their Abitur, the same admission requirements apply as for a semester abroad, with the exception of the academic requirements. With the application, however, you should already submit the last half-year report from the upper level and a separate language certificate.
Application process: Application for a bachelor’s degree
There are two ways to apply for a bachelor’s degree in the UK. However, applicants can only choose one of the two options. Anyone who has decided on the university of their choice and a course of study and is only interested in this combination should submit a direct application at an early stage. In this case, applicants must comply with the deadline of the respective university of their choice for the application deadline.
Application via UCAS
The other application process takes place via the UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admission Services) coordinating office in Great Britain. An application via UCAS is a collective application. One of the following options is possible via this central application:
- for a course at up to five universities
- at a university for up to five courses
An additional advantage for all prospective students who apply through a placement agency: After registration, the formal application process is provided with a certain buzzword and corrected if necessary. The customer advisors can check all application forms for completeness and accuracy and also remind them of important deadlines.
For the start of studies in the next academic year, there is a fixed application deadline for applications via UCAS: January 15. The only exemptions from this application deadline are the universities of Oxford or Cambridge and medical courses. Even if this deadline is missed, it is still possible to apply via UCAS. However, students can then only apply for the remaining study places, which is why UCAS also applies: the earlier, the better.
Students who apply in good time (alternatively: within the deadline) will also be informed promptly as to whether they have received a study place through UCAS. If it was not possible to acquire a study place at the first attempt, students can then apply for the free contingent of study places in a second attempt. It is possible to submit a later / late application until June 30th.
Special case: Foundation degree
Those who do not meet the admission requirements for a regular semester stay have the opportunity to acquire the missing language qualifications in a Foundation Degree. There, prospective students acquire the knowledge they need for a bachelor’s degree in Great Britain in preconditional courses.
This option may also exist if an application for a bachelor’s degree via UCAS has not been accepted. Bachelor students may then receive an offer for a foundation program, usually with a transfer option to a college.
Application process for graduate studies: Master’s and PhD
There are no standardized application deadlines for a Masters degree in Great Britain. To learn more about United Kingdom and Europe, please visit proexchangerates. You can apply at the earliest eleven months before the start of your studies. Most of the one-year Masters courses in Great Britain begin in the autumn semester.
The application process is managed by the university. If the admission requirements are met, places will be awarded as long as there is capacity.
Similar to applying for a master’s degree, there is no fixed deadline for applying for a PhD program in the UK. The application for a doctoral degree can be even more flexible than for a master’s degree: Admission to a doctoral degree is even possible in the middle of the semester if the doctorate is part of a research-related project.
Master’s students who are interested in a doctoral degree but have not yet found a supervisor for their doctoral thesis abroad will receive additional help with the application via the agency.
Agencies can provide an overview of the research universities in Great Britain and provide contacts to the central offices of the department. Some universities also have databases in which the capacity of vacant doctoral positions can be checked.
Further procedure after the application process
If all steps of the application process for studying in Great Britain have been successfully completed, students can fully concentrate on further preparation for their stay abroad. If you have not already applied for accommodation when you applied, you should put this at the top of your list of priorities.
Furthermore, it makes sense to take out a foreign health insurance in order to be covered for emergencies. Students also benefit from it if they include the flight as well as the book train or bus journey in advance. This means that tickets with discounts of up to 50% can often be purchased for buses and trains.
