Huntington, West Virginia
According to Countryaah.com, Huntington is a town in West Virginia, at the confluence of the Ohio and
Guyandotte rivers, 70 miles west of the state capital of Charleston. The city
has 47,079 residents, and is the centerpiece of the Huntington – Ashland (metropolitan
area) city region with 356,474 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).
Huntington is an important river port with shipping of coal and petroleum
products. The city is a railway hub with large workshops, and with abundant
natural resources in the surrounding area, the industry was long based on oil
and coal, steelworks, chemical industry and the production of glass and stone
products. After major cuts in the steel industry in the 1980s, the city has
since adapted to the region's de-industrialization, and new industries such as
the high-tech, film and television industries, health, biotechnology, finance,
tourism and service have taken over.
The city was founded in 1870 as the western end of the Chesapeake and Ohio
railroad, named after Collis Potter Huntington, the founder of the railroad
company.
