Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City is the capital and largest city of the state of Utah in the United States. The city is located on the Jordan River, 15 km southeast of Great Salt Lake and has 200 544 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). The metropolitan region has 1,203,105 residents, and the Wasatch Front conglomerate, which includes the cities of Provo, Ogden, Orem and Brigham – with Salt Lake City as its center – has about 2.51 million residents, roughly 82 percent of Utah’s total population.

Salt Lake City is called the Crossroads of the West due to its central location in both road and train networks through the Rocky Mountains, and is especially known as the headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, known as the Mormons.

Business

Salt Lake City is a transportation and trade center with a variety of industries, including the electronic, chemical, confectionery and food industries. By the way, the city has petroleum refineries and considerable tourist traffic. There are several universities, including the University of Utah, founded in 1850.

Tourism is great, especially in the winter when “The Greatest Snow on Earth” helps a number of ski resorts such as Alta, Park City, Brighton, Solitude and Snowbird offer fantastic skiing conditions just outside the city. Salt Lake City hosted the Olympic Winter Games in 2002.

Mormon town

Salt Lake City was built by Brigham Young and other Mormon leaders in 1847 as Great Salt Lake City. In 1868, the city got its present name. Since then, the city may have been primarily known as the Mormon headquarters.

At Temple Square lies the temple built between 1853 and 1893, and the huge Tabernacle, built in 1867, which is also the base of the famous Mormon Tabernacle Choir with over 360 singers. The choir was formed in 1847, and since 1929 has held a special radio and later television concert every Sunday.
