Oak Ridge, Tennessee

Oak Ridge, city of United States of America, Tennessee, on the Tennessee River, 30 miles west of Knoxville; 27,500 in. (2007). Founded in 1942 as a closed center for the development and manufacture of nuclear bombs, the so-called Manhattan Project (75,000 in 1945). Nuclear Research Institute, founded in 1948. Today, the Oak Ridge reactor is a national monument.

Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis is a city in Tennessee, USA, by the Mississippi River in the southwest of the state. The city has 652,236 residents, and is part of the neighboring West Memphis city of Arkansas and adjacent Mississippi areas in a larger city region with 1,348,260 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Business

Memphis is Tennessee’s second most populous city, far less than the capital city of Nashville. It is an important river port, railway hub, commercial and industrial center with chemical and pharmaceutical factories. The city has one of the world’s largest cotton and lumber markets, and has long been an important place in the American music industry.

History and culture

An American fort was built here in 1797, and the city was founded in 1819 by later President Andrew Jackson. Memphis was an important center for the cotton and lumber trade in the 19th century, and the city still has a cotton carnival in May.

Memphis has played a significant role in the development of American popular music, and is known as the home of the blues (Beale Street) and the hometown of a number of well-known rock and roll artists, including Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins. Graceland, Elvis Presley’s home, is located just outside the city, and is a major and important tourist destination.

Civil Rights Defender and Nobel Peace Prize winner Martin Luther King jr. was murdered in Memphis in 1968. The Lorraine Motel, where the murder happened, is today a memorial.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

Chattanooga is a city in the United States in the state of Tennessee, at Tennesseelven, just north of the border with Georgia. The city has 179,139 residents, forming the core of a larger metropolitan area region that extends into Georgia with 556,548 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Chattanooga has a versatile industry in the production of iron and steel, agricultural equipment, chemicals, textiles and clothing, food and machinery. The city is the headquarters of the Tennessee Valley Authority, and a regional center for wholesale and financial operations. The city has a state university, founded in 1886, and several colleges. The tourism industry has increased in importance in recent years.

The town was founded in 1815, and was named Ross’ Landing until 1838. It was located on the border between the corn and cotton regions, and was an important transport hub for the Southern states during the American Civil War. The city was conquered by the Union troops under General Ulysses Grant 23-25. November 1863. Civil War battlefields are preserved in Chattanooga and Chickamauga National Military Park. Just outside the city are Lookout Mountain (729 masl) and Missionary Ridge, which are the most famous places of battle.
