Dayton, Ohio

Dayton is a city in the United States in the state of Ohio. It is located on the Great Miami River, 75 km north of Cincinnati. The city has 140,371 residents and forms a larger metropolitan area with 803,416 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). The population has declined since the 1960s in the city itself, after 1970 also in the region as a whole.

Dayton is a significant commercial and industrial hub. Together with the defense and aerospace industry, health services account for much of the Dayton area’s economy. These include the Air Force Institute of Technology and the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Several universities and colleges exist within the city region, including the Catholic University of Dayton (1850) and Wright State University (1967). The town has several museums and its own symphony orchestra.

Dayton was founded in 1805. The construction of the Miami Canal to Cincinnati (1829) and the Erie Canal (1825) stimulated the city’s growth. The city was the center for Southern state sympathizers (“Copperheads”) during the American Civil War. Dayton suffered major flood damage in 1913. An extensive urban renewal of the downtown area began in the 1970s. By the way, the city is also known for the Dayton Agreement of 1995 for peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina after the civil war there.

Columbus, Ohio

Columbus is the capital of the state of Ohio in the United States. The town is located at the confluence of the Scioto River and Olentangy River, on a plain near the state’s geographical center. Columbus has 879,170 residents and is the core of a larger metropolitan area with 2,078,725 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). The climate is humid continental.

Columbus is an important transport hub and a major center for industry, finance, education and research.

Business and culture

The industry is multifaceted, with production of, among other things, aircraft and equipment for the aerospace industry, car parts, electrical appliances, machinery, glass, paint, shoes and food. One of the world’s largest insurance companies, Nationwide Mutual Insurance, is headquartered in Columbus.

There are several colleges and colleges in Columbus, including Ohio State University (1870), Capital University (1850) and Franklin University (1902). The Battelle Memorial Institute with more than 22,000 employees is one of the world’s largest research and technology institutions.

Columbus has several museums, an art gallery, a symphony orchestra and a zoo and aquarium. Areas near local water reservoirs are the focus of park and recreation activities. Oktoberfest is held annually and Columbus Day Celebration every year in October.

History

Columbus was planned as a political center and named after Kristoffer Columbus in 1812 and became the state capital in 1816. Columbus gained city status in 1834 and experienced strong growth after 1840, following the construction of railways and canals. Waves of immigrants created an Irish quarter on the city’s northern outskirts and a German quarter on the city’s southern outskirts. 90 died and many thousands were homeless in a flood disaster in 1913.

Establishments of large aircraft factories during World War II created a new period of growth. Later Columbus was marked by the economic downturn in the old industrial belt. In the early 1990s, Columbus became Ohio’s largest city.

Cincinnati, Ohio

Cincinnati is a city in the United States, Ohio, on the Ohio River. The city has 301 residents, and is the core of a larger metropolitan area region that extends into Kentucky and Indiana with 2,179,082 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). After 1960, the population has declined by approx. 25 per cent in the city itself, after 1970 there have been trends of stagnation and decline also throughout the city region.

Cincinnati is the economic, financial and cultural center of the Ohio Valley. It is beautifully located and Winston Churchill called the city “the most beautiful city in the Union”. Charles Dickens was just as generous in his praise when he visited the city in 1842.

Culture and Business

The city is an important hub for roads, railways and air routes. The port is one of the largest inland ports in the United States, with transportation of coal, iron and wood, etc. Foreign trade has become important for the city’s economy in recent years, with more than 250 companies involved in foreign trade. Many large companies are headquartered in Cincinnati, including the supermarket chain Kroger, which is the city’s largest employer.

Cincinnati has many higher education institutions, including the University of Cincinnati, founded in 1874, the Catholic Xavier University, founded in 1831, and the Hebrew Union College, founded in 1875.

The cultural life includes a number of museums and the internationally renowned symphony orchestra. Maifestivalen (established in 1873) is one of the oldest festivals for choir, orchestral music and opera. The zoo is one of the largest in the United States. President William Howard Taft was born here. Many believe that the minstrel character Jim Crow was also born here. Thomas “Daddy” Rice introduced him here as a stage character approx. 1830; later, “Jim Crow” came to designate all black institutions and facilities in the days of racial segregation after the American Civil War. In 2004, the museum opened the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, dedicated to the history and freedom struggle of Black Americans.

History

The city was founded in 1788, from 1790 named Cincinnati after an American officers’ union. River traffic in Ohio led to strong growth from the early 1800s. The city was given a further boost when the Ohio-Erie Canal was completed in 1832. By the mid-1800s, Cincinnati had become the United States’ largest pork processing center, and “Porkopolis” as the city was often called, had 160,000 residents in 1860, many of them Irish and German immigrants. Cincinnati has historically been a link between the industrialized northern states and the rural southern states.
