Wilmington, North Carolina

Wilmington is a town in North Carolina, on the Cape Fear River, 50 miles from the estuary; around 119,000 residents in 2017, threefold in the city region.

Wilmington is the state’s most important port city with exports of cotton, tobacco, peanuts and timber. The University of North Carolina was founded in 1946.

Wilmington was born in 1740, was the headquarters of the British General Charles Cornwallis during the War of Independence in 1781, and was an important southern state port during the American Civil War.

Fort Raleigh, North Carolina

Charlotte, North Carolina

Charlotte is a city in the United States of America, North Carolina, near the Catawba River. The city has 859,035 residents, of which 42.8 percent are considered white, 35.3 percent black and 13.7 percent Hispanic. The city forms the core of a larger metropolitan area that extends into South Carolina, with 2,525,305 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Business

Charlotte is an important trading center for the southeastern states of the so-called Carolinas Crescent, an industrial region that extends in an arc from Raleigh, North Carolina to Greenville, South Carolina, with a significant textile industry. The industry also includes manufacturing of furniture, machinery, metals and foodstuffs. The city has several universities and colleges, including the Queens College of 1771, the oldest in the state, and the State University of 1946.

History

Charlotte was founded in the 1750s and gained city status in 1768, named for Charlotte Sophie by Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), Georg 3’s queen. The city was from 1799 to 1848 – when the great gold rush in California came – the most important center for gold production in the United States. The town is considered the arsenal of the Presbyterian Church in the Southern States. In the 19th century, a number of denominations – Baptists, Methodists, Episcopal, Lutheran and Catholic – grew up, so Charlotte is called “The City of Churches.”

Chapel Hill, North Carolina

Chapel Hill, city of USA, North Carolina, 19 km southwest of Durham; 51,500 inb (2007), part of the larger Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill (metropolitan area) region with 1,527,200 inb (2007), which together make up the so-called ” Research Triangle”. Chapel Hill is the seat of state university, founded in 1789, with 28,100 students (2007). The city was founded in 1792 and gained city status in 1857.
