St. Louis, Missouri

St. Louis is a city in the United States in the state of Missouri. It is located on the west bank of Mississippi, 16 km south of the mouth of Missouri. The city has 308,626 residents and is the core of a larger metropolitan area with 2,807,338 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

The city is a leading communications and trade center, and is considered a center for biotechnology and medical research. St. Louis is the seat of Catholic St. Louis University (1818), of Washington University (1853) – affiliated with Barnes-Jewish Hospital – and of the University of Missouri – St. Louis just north of town (1963). By the way, there is an art museum, well-known symphony orchestra, basketball stadium and large park facilities.

History

St. Louis was established as a French trading station in 1764 and named after Louis 9 the Saint. In the 19th century it became an important river port; Railways were built to this “gateway to the West,” symbolized by the 190-meter-high stainless steel monument, Gateway Arch (1964), designed by renowned Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen. The city is considered the starting point for the Oregon Trail, although Independence was the actual starting point. St. Louis is today an important hub for river traffic between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico. Organizer of the 1904 Summer Olympic Games.

Jefferson City, Missouri

Jefferson City is a city in the United States, capital of Missouri, Cole County, on the Missouri River, 175 miles west of St. Louis. The city has 40 550 residents (2007).

Jefferson City is a commercial and industrial center with the production of, among other things, foodstuffs, wood products, footwear, cosmetics. The city is the seat of Lincoln University (1866).

Jefferson City was founded in 1825 by Daniel M. Boone, son of the pioneer Daniel Boone, and named after President Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809).

Independence, Missouri

Independence, United States, Missouri, on the Missouri River, 15 miles east of Kansas City; 110,700 in. (2007), is part of the Kansas City region. trade; food industry and manufacturing of agricultural machinery. Harry Truman’s hometown. Harry S. Truman Library and Museum (1957) with Thomas Hart Benton’s famous mural “Independence and the Opening of the West”. Here is the headquarters of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a dissenter of the Mormon Church.

Hannibal City, Missouri

Hannibal is a city in the United States in the state of Missouri, the Mississippi River. The city has 17,590 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). Mark Twain grew up here, and the city forms the setting for several of his stories, including Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn. The Mark Twain Museum is listed on the U.S. list of national historic landmarks.

Hannibal was a famous stop on the Underground Railroad, an escape route for slaves. Lawless Jesse James was here. The city became a market town in 1839, and gained city status in 1845.
