States and is located by the Mississippi River. The city has 422,331 residents
(U.S. Census, 2017), most of Scandinavian and German descent.
Minneapolis and the state capital of Saint Paul, just east, are often called
the Twin Cities, and with adjacent areas form the larger Minneapolis – St. Paul

Business
Minneapolis is a transportation, financial, commercial and industrial hub for
a sprawling agricultural area. It is located at the Saint Anthony Falls
waterfall, which puts a stop to river traffic and gave impetus first to
sawmilling, later to mills. The industry includes large grain mills,
slaughterhouses, machinery and oilseed industries. The Grain Exchange ("The
Grain Exchange") is one of the largest grain markets for cash sales in the
world, however, the electronics and computer industries are important. By the
way, the city is a trade center, including the United States' largest mall Mall
of America in the Bloomington suburb.
The city is the seat of the State University, founded in 1851, has colleges
of music and arts and a famous symphony orchestra (created 1903); Catholic
Archdiocese. Within the city limits there are more than 20 lakes, including Lake
Minnetonka, which play an important role in city life and are used for various
forms of recreation.
History
Minneapolis grew up as a sawmill, later a mill, gained city status in 1867
and merged with Saint Anthony in 1872. The city is the center of "Norwegian
America." Minneapolis had about 13,000 residents in 1870, in 1900 203,000
residents, and in 1950 522,000 residents.
