Salem, Massachusetts

Salem is a city in the state of Massachusetts in the United States with 43,415 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). It is located 26 miles northeast of Boston.

The city is one of the oldest in New England. Much of its identity is linked to the witch trials in 1692.

Business and culture

Electronic equipment and machinery are manufactured, among other things. Service industries such as higher education (Salem State University) and tourism are important. Pioneer Village is a reconstruction of early Salem.

History

Salem was founded in 1626 by fishermen led by Roger Conant who came to the outlet of the Naumkeag River where American indigenous people had a village and a trading center. Roger Williams founded the first Congregational Church here in 1629 and Salem gained the status of a British colony the following year. During the witch trials in 1692, 19 people were executed.

The author Natha niel Hawthorne was born in Salem in 1804. The town was an important port and shipbuilding town until about 1850, when the port was destroyed. In 1914, more than 400 houses were destroyed in a fire. In 2013, Salem was designated the birthplace of the American National Guard.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

Plymouth is a small town in the United States in the state of Massachusetts. It is located at Plymouth Bay, 60 miles southeast of Boston. The city has 58 216 residents (U.S. Census, 2016).

Plymouth is New England’s oldest city, founded in 1620 by the Mayflower Pilgrim Fathers. The oldest settlement has been reconstructed in the Plimoth Plantation with the Pilgrim Hall Museum (1824). Tourism is the main industry.

The name is from Plymouth, England, from which Mayflower sailed to America.

New Bedford, Massachusetts

New Bedford, city of USA, Massachusetts, 90 km south of Boston; 91,800 in. (2007). Included (together with neighboring cities Attleboro and Fall River) in a larger city region. Was once a leading cotton industry city, now dominates the manufacture of electrical equipment, confectionery and rubber goods. Good port. In the first half of the 19th century, New Bedford was the world’s largest whaling port, with Seamen’s Bethel immortalized through Herman Melville’s novel Moby Dick.

Medford, Massachusetts

Medford is a city in Massachusetts, United States, with 57,797 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). Located on the Mystic River, Medford is a residential suburb of Boston, just northwest of the city.

The city was founded in 1630, and the first ocean-going ships built in the United States were built here. It was long an important port in the triangle trade Africa – America – Europe.

Tufts University is located in Medford, which was founded in 1852 and is particularly well known for its internationally oriented political science studies at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy.

Medford has some industry, including the manufacture of leather goods and transport equipment.

Lawrence, Massachusetts

In Massachusetts, at the Merrimack River, 40 miles north of Boston; 70,000 inbound (2007), included in the greater Boston region. Formerly one of the United States’ largest centers for the wool industry; also cotton industry etc. Founded in 1847, urban status in 1853. Great strike in 1912 with Industrial Workers of the World (IWW – “Wobblies”) in the center. The governor called out troops and two people were killed. The strikers were accused of planning to blow up the site, but one of the owners had paid a provocateur to plant the explosives to blacken the workers. The strikers’ demands were met.

Concord, Massachusetts

Concord is a city in the state of Massachusetts, 30 miles northwest of Boston, on the Concord River. The city has 19,237 residents (U.S. Census, 2017), and is part of the Boston region. The city shares names with the state capital Concord in New Hampshire. It is most famous for the fact that the American Revolution began here on April 19, 1775.

Concord was founded in 1635. In the 19th century, the city was an important cultural center, including as the hometown of poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson, poet and naturalist Henry David Thoreau and author Nathaniel Hawthorne. Concord is a beautiful city with many historical monuments, including the Minute Man National Historical Park which marks the inaugural battle of the American Revolution (1775-1783).

Cambridge, Massachusetts

Cambridge is the seat of Harvard University, founded in 1636 (where the famous Radcliffe College for Women is also affiliated), and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), founded in 1861, two of the most prestigious universities and colleges in the United States. Founded in 1636, named after Cambridge in England, but mentioned in 1631 as “the newe towne” in reports from the Massachusetts Bay Colony.
