Louisville has 621,349 residents, and is the centerpiece of a larger metropolitan area that also extends into Indiana with 1,293,953 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Louisville is an important communications, trade and industrial center. Shipping and shipping have long been important industries, and the city is especially known for the production of whiskey (bourbon). Bridges lead across the river to the suburbs of New Albany and Jeffersonville in Indiana.
