Indianapolis, Indiana

Indianapolis is a city in the United States and the capital of the state of Indiana, located on the White River. The city has 863,002 residents, and is the core of a major metropolitan area with 2,028,614 residents (U.S. Census, 2017).

Business

Indianapolis is an important road and rail hub, and a significant commercial and industrial center. The most important industries are finance, insurance, real estate, rental and leasing. Several international companies are headquartered here, including the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, the city’s largest employer in the private sector.

Education and culture

Indianapolis is also an important educational center; since 1969 branch of Indiana University – Purdue University, Butler University (founded 1855), University Hospital, Music Conservatory, John Herron Institute of Art and several other higher education institutions. The city also has a number of cultural institutions, including the state museum, symphony orchestra and White River State Park with a zoo.

A famous annual car race, the car racing Indianapolis 500, has been organized since 1911 on the Indianapolis course. Poet James Whitcomb Riley, President Theodore Roosevelt and author Booth Tarkington lived here, and author Kurt Vonnegut was born here.

History

Founded in 1821, Indianapolis became the state capital from 1825. Cumberland Road, which came to town in 1827, and the Rock Island Railroad in 1833, stimulated development. In 1910, there were more than 60 car factories in the city, which only stood for Detroit in that regard. The city underwent rapid industrialization after the 1880s, with ample access to natural gas and coal.

Most of the surrounding Marion County was incorporated in the city in 1970, which is one of the largest in the United States by area. In the 1970s and early 1980s, Indianapolis experienced significant financial problems, partly as a result of closures in the automotive industry and other major industrial sectors. In recent years, it has been a leading city in American urban planning, with the construction of a number of major facilities for commerce, sports (including the indoor arena Hoosier Dome), congresses and tourism.
