First, the production and export of silk and indigo was important; since cotton, sugar, pulp, paper and fertilizers. In the center lies the Old Town, a protected historical area with significant tourism.

Columbus was conquered by Union troops in 1865, a week after the surrender of Southern States General Robert E. Lee, due to poor communications.
Extensive renewal and revitalization has been going on in Columbus since the second half of the 1990s.
The city is named after Kristoffer Columbus, and shares names with Columbus, Ohio.
