Tucson, Arizona

Tucson is a city in the state of Arizona in the United States. The city has 545,975 residents (U.S. Census, 2018) and forms a larger metropolitan area with around 1 million residents.

Tucson is located on the most arid Santa Cruz River in southern Arizona, 160 miles southeast of Phoenix and 97 kilometers north of the Mexico border. The city is Arizona’s second largest and has several suburbs. It is a trade center and a transport hub, and has a lot of industry.

The city’s Spanish name Tucsón is derived from the indigenous name Chuk Shon, meaning “at the foot of the black (elevation)”, and refers to the black basalt-covered rock Sentinel Peak. The town is also called “Old Pueblo”.

Population

Tucson has had a steady increase in population since 1900 and a strong increase in the population between 1950 and 1960. Especially in the winter months many so-called “snowbirds” live in holiday homes in and around the city. In Tucson, the population is predominantly 69.7 percent white, 5 percent African-American, and 2.9 percent Asian. 2.7 per cent have indigenous people (2010).

Economics and culture

In the area, fruits, including apples and grapes, are grown, and there is mining on lead, copper, zinc and molybdenum.

The industry is considerable and varied. There are many high-tech enterprises, including Raytheon Missile Systems (headquarters), Honeywell International Inc. and IBM. Many companies produce optics and optoelectronics.

The University of Arizona is one of the city’s largest jobs, and there are departments of other universities as well as several colleges. Many also work in city and state administration as well as in tourism.

There are many parks, five golf courses and Reid Park with the Reid Park Zoo. “The Loop” is a popular system of hiking, running, cycling and riding trails that surround the city.

The Desert Laboratory Botanical Desert Laboratory is located on Tumahoc Hill on an outskirts of the city center.

There are many museums in and around Tucson, including the Arizona State Museum, Fort Lowell Museum, The Tucson Museum of Art, the Center for Creative Photography and the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, including the zoo, aquarium, botanical garden and museum.

The Arizona Theater Company and Arizona Onstage Productions are among several theaters. A symphony orchestra was founded in 1929 and Arizona Opera (formerly the Tucson Opera Company in 1971. Tucson has been a punk rock center since the 1970s.

The annual Tucson Gem & Mineral Show jewelery and mineral fair is held in January-February, and there is a large annual book festival in March. Every December and March, the annual 4th Avenue Street Fair is held in the Fourth Avenue shopping and restaurant district near the University of Arizona.

History

North American indigenous people lived in the area about 12,000 years ago. North of Tucson, a village from around 2100 BCE was excavated. Agriculture based on excavation of water channels and cultivation of maize and beans, etc, was introduced around 1200 BCE.

The Spanish missionary Eusebio Francesco Kino visited the area in 1692 and founded about 1700 a mission station there. In 1775 Hugo O’Conor, who is considered the founder of Tucson, created a fort in the center of the later city. The Tucson area was incorporated into the state of Sonora after Mexico became independent in 1821. After the Mexican-American War of 1846-1848, Tucson was taken over by the United States in 1849, becoming one of the important routes into California during the gold rush that same year. Tucson is located in the area that the United States purchased from Mexico in 1853 (Gadsden Purchase).

During the American Civil War, Tucson was the western capital of the Confederate Arizona Territory from 1861 to 1862, when it was included in New Mexico territory. The city was then part of the New Arizona Territory with Tucson as its capital in the years 1867-1877. Tucson gained city status in 1877.

Fort Lowell outside the city was built in 1873 to help settlers and travelers during the apache wars. Tucon’s growth was stimulated by the arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in 1880, the discovery of silver near Tombstone and of copper in Bisbee. The University of Arizona between Fort Lowell and Tucson was founded in 1885. Saint Augustine Cathedral was completed in 1896.

Tucson was Arizona’s largest city and trade center before being passed by Arizona’s capital Phoenix between 1910 and 1920. In recent years, both Tucson and Phoenix have been among the American cities with the largest increase in population. La Encantada Shopping Center opened in 2004.
