Taking Care Of The Schedule And The Weather Helps When Leaving The Car In The Garage.
The hours lost in traffic and the concern to preserve the environment are only two good reasons for who wants to drop the car and adopt the bicycle as a new means of transport. But anyone who wants to ride for work or for any compromise must follow the guidebook of the skinny folk to avoid unpleasant surprises on the way.
“When I started cycling for work, it took me some time to learn some of the care that would get me out of trouble,” says Ian Thomas, a video producer who has been using the bicycle for five years, after realizing that it took too long to Reach the places by car.
1. Get Acquainted With The Idea
The definitive replacement of the car by bicycle does not need to be done without prior notice. Start small. Before you use it to get to work, you must become accustomed to the effort and the course you will take. “If there is no preparation, you will get sweaty, tired and stressed in your professional environment. It would only bring dismay and a desire to drive again. The ideal is that you get used to pedaling on a daily basis before taking the bike as a means of getting around, “explains Ana Paula Crosneuman, a pharmacist who took the car out of routine two years ago to lead a healthier life.
But before you include the bike in everyday life, do an adaptation workout. The cyclist must adapt his routine to the new means of transport. A good alternative to the transition phase and to get into the rhythm is to pedal in a group. “From the moment the rider becomes more secure, he will enjoy every ride to work,” says Ian.
2. Beware Of Clothing
The clothes you wear to pedal also makes all the difference. Remember: you are outdoors and making effort, soon will perspire. For those who go from bike to work, the solution is to leave some pieces of clothing in the workplace. So, even if you sweat enough, just change your clothes when you arrive. “I pedal every day with a tie, shirt, social pants and shoe. I just leave the jacket in the office so I do not have to fold it all day to put it in my backpack, “says Ian.
Another tip is equipment of the bike with a saddlebag (the trunk of the skinny). “It is very easy to put the suit in that compartment. It’s just folding the clothes right that it does not get messy, “says Ian. Placing baskets or saddle bags on the bicycle increases the practicality of the bicycle. It is easier to take clothes and accessories such as laptops, purses, wallets and even backpacks wherever you go. “I use a basket in front of the bike. I usually leave my bag there, not to walk with anything on my back, “says Ana Paula.
For women, they are worth the same care. However, each rider should identify what brings more comfort and safety. Ana Paula, for example, pedals up. “I do not encounter any difficulties, but for those who bother a tip it’s always to leave a pair of shoes under the work table and to peddle tennis shoes,” she says.
3. Use Time In Your Favor
Even if the home ride to work done by bicycle is often faster than by car, especially because of traffic, it is advisable to leave your place of origin at least 15 minutes off. This gives you time to compose yourself when you reach your final destination. Also, using a bicycle as a means of transportation is different from using it for exercise. The pace should be slower, as pedaling too fast causes the body to transpire more.
One benefit of cycling is that the time spent on a particular route is very similar every day.”I know I’m going to spend 20 minutes every day to get to work. With the car or bus it took an hour, at least. As I always take the same time, it is much easier to program me, not to pedal very fast, and to have a break in the schedule to get ready, “says Ana Paula.
But it has an important detail for your bike script: not always the fastest car route is the best to do with the bike. According to Ian, taking the route several times during weekends helps when choosing the best route. “Often the road made by the car is longer and goes through more climbs, which is not very practical for cycling. Therefore, I almost always avoid avenues and opt for quieter streets as a route. That way, I flee from the traffic and know places in the city that I would not know if I were in a car, “Ian says.
4. Watch The Weather
To escape the rain, create the custom of following the weather forecast. And always have a plan B in hand. “In my backpack I always carry a raincoat and a raincoat when the weather is cloudy. It is not legal to get to work or a wet appointment, “says João Evangelista, a locksmith who has been using the bicycle for 20 years – which he himself has done – as a means of transportation.
When the weather is very dry and hot, it is critical to prevent it. Wear sunscreen and sunglasses to protect yourself from ultraviolet rays, and especially avoid pedaling when the sun is getting louder. “I try not to leave the house from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm because, besides being very sweaty and tired, pedaling under these conditions can cause dehydration, causing falls in the middle of the street,” says Ana Paula.
5. Know How To Use Accessories
Helmet and glove are indispensable accessories for anyone who wants to start riding a bicycle. Protecting the head from an impact and keeping your hands dry and firm are safety tips pointed out by all cyclists. However, you have to choose the right equipment, especially for women. “I’m going to make-up and my hair’s ready for my work meetings. A helmet that was totally closed would litter my hair. So I opted for a helmet that, besides being safe, is open, ventilating my face and my hair, “says Ana Paula.
6. Always Have A Plan B
The bicycle is a great means of transportation, but it does not always give the message. On some occasions it is necessary to know how to combine the skinny like the public transport. “When the rain is strong, it’s very hot or I’m going to a place that is very far from my house, I’m looking for subway stations that have special bicycle parking,” says Ana Paula.
Also, having money in your pocket to take a subway or a taxi in case something unforeseen happens with the bike can avoid many problems. “Sometimes, because of the weather, I have to leave my bicycle in the parking lot. When that happens, I’ll go home by bus and get my bike the next day, “says Aline Cavalcante, a journalist who started biking two years ago after moving from Aracaju to São Paulo.
7. Encourage More People
It is easier to use the bike when more people in your life have the same habit. “It took me a long time to convince my bosses that it was better to ride a bicycle for work, since it was the company that paid for the fuel in my car. But they stopped implying that after seeing that I was not late, I was more willing and when three other people from the office began to do the same, “recalls Ana Paula.
