Record is from cyclist Marcelo Florentino Soares, who completed the course of more than 10 thousand kilometers in 57 days, passing through 17 Brazilian states.
The São Paulo cyclist Marcelo Florentino Soares, 43, joins RankBrasil in 2015 for the fastest bike ride from Monte Caburaí to Chuí.
In 57 days (between January 8 and March 5), he completed 10,332.30 km between the two extremes of the country, passing through about 595 municipalities of 17 Brazilian states. On average, the paulistano pedaled 18 hours daily.
According to the record holder, the idea of making the journey came through the suggestion of a friend, talking about the challenge launched by George Silva de Souza, who in 2002 carried out the course in 79 days.
With no money to sign up for the race, Marcelo sold an old bike and managed to raise the value. Participation in the competition still depended on another factor: the lack of financial resources needed during the trip.
The dream of a cyclist came true thanks to the businesswoman Neusa Telheiro. “She has helped me in everything from air tickets, spare parts to bike and food. For lack of competitors, the challenge was almost canceled. In addition to the paulistano, only a Bahian and a Danish were registered. “The foreigner decided not to participate and the Bahia challenger gave up on the 280 km mark.”
According to him, the greatest difficulty was crossing the Transamazônica – a road without asphalt. “It’s not mud but clay, so when it dried it cut the tires,” he says. Another obstacle was finding spare parts. “I’m glad I took almost everything to replace,” he says. Upon encountering different cultural, economic and landscape realities, the recordist comments on the incredible experience: “A beautiful learning of life”.
Wherever he passed, he attracted the attention of onlookers.”Some would stop me and ask what I was doing. Motorcyclists, car drivers and truck drivers would pair with me and want to know what my destiny was,”he says. According to Marcelo, others were enchanted with the story and even paid their meal.”A lot of wonderful and unfamiliar people helped me to meet the challenge.”
Upon arriving in Chuí, after completing the whole course, the cyclist was received at a school, received a trophy and even gave an interview to an Uruguayan TV.”I felt floating, as if arriving in the sky and already willing to take on a new challenge,” he recalls.According to the Brazilian record, the paulistano says that the sensation is of recognition for his commitment and dedication during the challenge. “Here is the country of football, but it is necessary to value other sports,” he says.
Extremes Of Brazil
Monte Caburaí is located in the municipality of Uiramutã (RR) and delimits the border between Brazil and Guyana. Already the Arroio Chuí is a small water course that is in the municipality of Chuí (RS), in the border between Brazil and Uruguay.
Until the 18th century, the border in Roraima had not been delimited and Oiapoque (AP) was mentioned as the northern terminal point of the country. The expression ‘from Oiapoque to Chuí’ was well known and is used to this day. It is important to emphasize that in the official maps the extreme north of Brazil is Mount Caburaí.
