With more than one decade on their backs, led flashlights as described in top-engineering-schools grew enough in technology and performance, to take the market. Either indoor or outdoor use, the majority of consumers turned to these products that produce more powerful light, but of lower consumption.
Because of this exponential growth of sales, FL1 standards of evidence, although they are not mandatory, looking to standardize products benefits were implemented.
Watt vs. Lumen
Incandescent lights used by old lanterns measured its power in watts, while major was the number, more powerful would be the beam of light. Sometimes incurred in the error of trying to compare measures: watt refers to the consumption of a transmitter of light, while the lumen is a unit of light capacity.
That said, it is important to understand the leds to measure their power in lumen (lm), a measure that simplified means the amount of light that produces a small candle of birthday, at a distance of 30 cm. A high number indicates a high light output of the product.
The amount of lumens necessary will depend on the use that will be making the flashlight. For example, to light up at home, to wear inside the tent or going for a walk at night on a path, 30 to 50 lm we will have more than enough.
The forces of security, hunters or cyclists, will require more power, in the order of the lm 200 or more, in configurations of beam of light, and not so much in landfill. This is because that in addition to the configuration of the reflector, headlight must have sufficient power to concentrate and emit light at greater distance with sufficient strength to illuminate objects.
The effective distance and beam concentration will depend on optics which have the flashlight. While more sophisticated sea, better will be the way in which distributes the power, allowing extending the light a greater distance or better fill in an environment. It is very important to check the end and the quality of the optics before buying a flashlight.
Amount of leds and colors
Assumes that the more leds have a flashlight, it will be more powerful. That statement is incorrect, a greater number of issuers means more consumption, which will not be reflected in filling or distance.
Another aspect to consider is the technology of leds. One modern may amount to more than five of the former, while its energy consumption will be significantly lower.
About colors, must be taken into account once more the use that we are going to give to the flashlight. For example, the red light will help us keep night vision, but difficult crawlers see the blood of an animal. The Green leds are ideal for hunting and fishing, since animals do not distinguish the beam in its entirety, and will only be alerted if it enlightens them directly for a few minutes. On the other hand, the Blue will facilitate identifying traces of blood that leaves a wounded animal.
Many of the lanterns, lanterns, or mining of led manufacturers adapt to FL1 standards, to ensure the user that if the product is dropped from a certain height will be cracks in the material that covers it, or it will damage the electrical circuit. This is achieved by repeating the process six times, from the height indicated on the box. For example, if the product indicates 2 m of impact resistance, this means that it was launched from that height 6 times, unless it suffers any damage. Most of the lights are built in two materials, plastic or aluminium. While plastic is cheaper, you never resist as well as aluminum.
Some flashlights claim to be waterproof or water resistant. There are three standards that will help us to determine this, the IPX4 pointing to the product as a water resistant from all angles, either rain or splashes; IPX7 which implies that it can plunge it up to 1 meter of water for 30 minutes, without suffering any damage; and, finally, the IPX8 degree given to lanterns able to be immersed to a depth which indicates the logo, up to about 4 hours.
Products with leds are ravaging the market. It is that they are quite superior to incandescent lights practically in all aspects. Whether camping or for use indoors, without place to doubt this technology is the best choice to illuminate.
