Bicycle is used By 58% of Port Workers

The Administration of the Ports of Paranaguá and Antonina (Appa) made an unpublished research among its employees on the use of the bicycle and found that 58% of them use the bicycle regularly as a means of transportation. Of the 455 employees, 78% have a bicycle and 69% have used the bike to get to work on occasion. The research was conducted with workers residing in Paranaguá and coastal municipalities.

The results were disclosed on Wednesday (03), during the workshop on “Respect for the cyclist in Paranaguá and the Port area”, an activity that integrates the actions of the Environment Week of the ports of Paraná.

Another important point pointed out by the research was the need to expand signposting and increase the number and campaigns of respect for the cyclist, especially for truck drivers arriving in the city. Paranaguá is the municipality with the highest number of bicycles per inhabitant of Paraná, with about 120 thousand bicycles for a population of 140 thousand inhabitants.

Appa’s CEO, Luiz Henrique Dividino, said that the research brought important results, including the need to interconnect the buildings, public and private terminals, companies and warehouses located in the port area, with cycle paths or bicycle paths.

“It is an important data to subsidize future projects. We know that the culture of bicycle use in Paranaguá surpasses many cities, but we did not have information that could give us the dimension of the use of this modal by port workers,”said Dividino.

The Appa Environment Directorate also made a survey on the spaces used to store the bicycles. It was evaluated the bicycle of the yard of triage of trucks, of the administrative building, of Silão, Estiva and the Civil Maintenance Directorate. At the time of the survey, 237 bikes were counted in these areas.

National Middle-The coordinator of the Ciclovida Program of UFPR and vice-president of the Federation of Cycling, José Carlos Belotto, said he was surprised by the percentage of workers who use the bicycle in the Port of Paranaguá.

“To give you an idea, in Brazilian cities the average number of people using the bicycle as a means of transportation is 3%. The use of the bicycle in Paranaguá is well above the national average,”said Belotto.

He gave a workshop on sustainable urban mobility on Wednesday (03) and addressed topics such as urban planning, legislation, bicycle history, examples of success and public policies to encourage the use of bicycles.

“The Paraná just gained a state policy of sustainable urban mobility, which I was able to participate in the elaboration and the decree was signed recently by the governor. Without doubt, a great advance,”emphasized Belotto.

Integration-Participated in the workshop on the use of the bicycle promoted by Appa, cyclists of the Association of Cyclists of Paranaguá (ACP) and other coastal cities, university students, technicians, specialists and adepts to use the bicycle. The Municipality of Paranaguá sent representatives of the areas of Urban Planning, Planning, Security and Municipal Guard.
