Columbus, Mississippi

Columbus is a city east of the state of Mississippi in the United States with 24,041 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). It is located on the east bank of the Tombigbee River, near the Alabama border.

Columbus is part of the Golden Triangle (Columbus, West Point and Starkville).

Business and culture

Columbus is a regional agricultural and communications center. Among other things, it produces defense systems, military aircraft, steel, cellulosic fibers, paper machine rolls, motors and sodium chlorate.

Columbus Air Force Base has been a training center for pilots since World War II. At the Golden Triangle Regional Airport near Columbus, Airbus Helicopters has a production center.

Mississippi University for Women was founded in 1884. Columbus High School established in 1992 is the city’s largest college.

The childhood home of playwright Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) is the town’s welcome center.

History

Choctaw – and Chickasaw – indigenous peoples lived in the area where Possum Town trade station from 1783 was located before Columbus was founded in 1819. During the American Civil War, the Confederate states had the Arsenal ‘s armed forces and hospitals in the city. Columbus served as temporary state capital after the city of Jackson fell in 1863.

The city is named after Kristoffer Columbus, and shares names with Columbus, Ohio and Columbus, Georgia.
