Little Rock, Arkansas

Little Rock is a city in the United States, and the capital of the state of Arkansas, located on the Arkansas River. The city has 198,606 residents and is the core of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway metropolitan area with 738,344 residents (U.S. Census, 2017). The city was founded in 1821.

Business

Little Rock is Arkansas’ largest city, communications and trade center. The city has an aluminum and food industry, manufacture of cotton seed oil and cakes and chemicals. In the surrounding area are rich bauxite beds, coal and crude oil. Little Rock became a port city in 1969, when a system of dams and locks made the Arkansas River navigable for larger boats. North Little Rock, which is part of the metropolitan region, has been an important railroad town ever since the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad was opened in 1853.

History

In Little Rock, where 42 percent of the population is black, in 1957 there was a serious racial conflict. In 1954, the United States Supreme Court had ruled that the racial divide in schools was in violation of the constitutional principles of equality, but Arkansas Governor Orval Faubus refused to introduce common classes for whites and colored people in the school. When nine colored students began attending Central High School in the fall of 1957, serious riots ensued. Faubus let the National Guard surround the school, officially to prevent clashes, but effectively to prevent the nine students from accessing. President Dwight D. Eisenhower deployed federal troops, who remained in the city throughout the school year. After the troops left Little Rock in 1958, authorities closed all public schools, and the dispute was resolved only in 1959 after several lawsuits.
